Panchayat Raj & Rural Development Department is the nodal department for most of the development and welfare activities in the rural areas of the State. The basic objective is sustainable and inclusive growth of rural Telangana through a multipronged strategy for eradication of poverty by increasing livelihoods opportunities, providing social safety net and developing infrastructure for growth. This is expected to improve quality of life in rural Telangana and to reach out to most disadvantaged sections of the society.
The Panchayat Raj &Rural Development Department in Telangana is under the administrative control of the Principal Secretary (PR&RD).
Major activities of PR&RD Dept. includes the following:
o Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Scheme (MGNREGS): Provision of wage employment and creation of individual / community assets related to natural resource management, improving rural sanitation, creation of rural infrastructure and raising of nurseries and plantations through MGNREGS.
o Pradhan Mantri Krishi Sinchayee Yojana (PMKSY): To ensure access to some means of protective irrigation to all agricultural farms in the country, to produce ‘per drop more crop’, thus bringing much desired rural prosperity.
o Improving rural sanitation and ensuring solid & liquid management in rural areas through Swachh Bharat Mission Gramin
o Employment and employability enhancement of the rural youth through Employment Generation and Marketing Mission.
o Stimulate local economic development, enhance basic services and create well planned clusters through Shyama Prasad Mukherjee RURBAN Mission
